French
At Broadmere, we want children to develop a love of languages and curiosity about the wider world. Learning French gives our pupils the opportunity not only to communicate in another language, but also to discover different cultures, develop confidence and begin to see themselves as global citizens.
Our French curriculum is enriched by specialist teaching from a Modern Foreign Languages leader from a local secondary school. This subject expertise ensures that pupils experience high-quality language teaching and also creates an important bridge between primary and secondary education, helping our children to build strong foundations for language learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
We want French lessons to be lively, engaging and purposeful. Children develop their skills through speaking, listening, reading and writing, with regular opportunities to hear and use French for themselves. Songs, games, stories, conversation and interactive activities help pupils to practise new language, build their vocabulary and develop increasingly accurate pronunciation.
As children progress through Key Stage 2, they build on their previous learning and become increasingly confident in understanding and communicating ideas in French. Vocabulary and grammatical knowledge are revisited and developed so that pupils learn how language works rather than simply memorising individual words and phrases.
Learning another language is also an opportunity to learn about people, places and cultures beyond our own community. Through French, we encourage pupils to appreciate similarities and differences, broaden their horizons and develop respect and curiosity for other cultures.
Above all, we want pupils to approach languages with confidence and enthusiasm. By the time they leave Broadmere, we want children to be willing to have a go, to communicate without being afraid of making mistakes and to understand that learning another language can open doors to new people, places and possibilities.
