An ambitious curriculum for every child

At Broadmere, we believe that every child has the right to an ambitious, exciting and inclusive education.

Our curriculum is designed to enable every pupil to thrive, aspire and achieve. It provides children with the knowledge, skills, vocabulary and experiences they need to succeed now, at the next stage of their education and in the wider world.

We have high expectations for all pupils. Our curriculum is deliberately designed to be accessible and ambitious for everyone, including pupils with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and pupils who are learning English as an additional language. We identify barriers to learning and work carefully to remove them, without reducing our ambition for what children can achieve.

What do we want our children to learn?

Our curriculum starts in Nursery and builds progressively through to Year 6.

Across every subject, we have carefully considered what we want children to know, understand and be able to do. Learning is sequenced so that new knowledge builds purposefully on what children have learned before and prepares them for what they will learn next.

Our progression documents identify the essential knowledge, vocabulary and skills pupils need at each stage. Teachers revisit important learning and make meaningful connections so that children do not simply encounter knowledge, but remember it, understand it and learn to use it confidently.

Strong foundations for future learning

We place particular importance on securing the foundations that enable children to access the whole curriculum.

Communication and language, reading, writing and mathematics are therefore at the heart of our curriculum. Children learn to read through a systematic approach to phonics, while reading, vocabulary and communication continue to be developed across every subject.

This is particularly important in our Broadmere community. We celebrate our multilingual learners and recognise that many of our children are developing English alongside one or more other languages. We therefore teach vocabulary explicitly and create frequent opportunities for children to speak, listen, discuss, explain and reason.

 

Teaching that makes learning stick

At Broadmere, teachers have a clear understanding of what they are teaching, why they are teaching it and how it connects with pupils' previous and future learning.

Our approach to teaching is evidence-informed and responsive. Teachers explain and model new learning clearly, provide opportunities for purposeful practice, revisit important knowledge and check pupils' understanding throughout lessons.

Assessment is part of everyday teaching. Teachers use questioning, discussion, retrieval and checks for understanding to find out what pupils know and remember. This enables them to respond to misconceptions, adapt their teaching and provide timely support or additional challenge.

 

An inclusive curriculum with high expectations

Teachers know their pupils well and use adaptive teaching to enable children to access the same ambitious curriculum wherever possible.

For pupils who need additional support, teachers carefully consider scaffolding, resources, communication, adult support and reasonable adjustments. Additional adults are deployed to promote pupils' learning and independence, while ensuring that pupils continue to benefit from high-quality teaching from their teacher.

We are equally ambitious for pupils who grasp concepts quickly. Teachers provide appropriate depth and challenge, enabling pupils to think hard, make connections, reason and apply their knowledge in increasingly sophisticated ways.

Beyond the National Curriculum

Our curriculum is enriched through specialist teaching, educational visits, visitors, performances, community partnerships, leadership opportunities and experiences beyond the classroom.

Specialist teaching in areas including Art, PE, Music and Modern Foreign Languages gives pupils access to subject expertise and enriches their experience of the curriculum. 

Through the wider BET Guarantee and Broadmere's enrichment opportunities, we aim to broaden horizons and provide experiences that help children discover new interests and understand the possibilities available to them. 

Our local community is also an important part of our curriculum. We want children to understand and value the community in which they live while developing the knowledge, confidence and curiosity to explore the wider world.

Preparing children for their future

Ultimately, our curriculum is about preparation for life.

By the time children leave Broadmere, we want them to have secure knowledge and skills, but also to be curious, articulate, resilient and ambitious learners.

We want them to ask questions, think critically, communicate confidently and know that their ideas matter.

We want them to understand the world beyond Broadmere and believe that they have a place within it.
