Mathematics
At Broadmere, we want every pupil to see themselves as a mathematician. We aim to develop confident, resilient pupils who enjoy mathematics, think deeply about number and can apply their knowledge to solve problems both within the classroom and in everyday life.
Our mathematics curriculum is based on White Rose Maths and a teaching-for-mastery approach. Learning is carefully sequenced in small, connected steps so that pupils build new knowledge upon secure foundations. Pupils develop the three essential elements of mathematics: fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, with opportunities to explain their thinking, make connections and apply their understanding in different contexts. White Rose places number at the heart of its curriculum and promotes depth of understanding before moving on to new learning.
We use a concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach. Pupils use practical equipment and manipulatives to explore mathematical ideas before making connections to pictures, diagrams and mathematical representations, and ultimately to abstract numbers and symbols. This helps pupils understand the mathematics behind a method rather than simply memorising a procedure.
Building fluency and number confidence
We know that secure number knowledge and fluent recall free pupils to tackle increasingly complex mathematics with confidence. In Key Stage 2, daily Speedy Maths provides regular practice of essential arithmetic and number skills, helping pupils develop accuracy, efficiency and confidence.
Times Tables Rock Stars further supports multiplication fluency in Key Stage 2, with dedicated weekly practice. In Year 4, pupils practise daily, reflecting the particular importance of securing rapid and accurate multiplication and division facts at this stage.
In Early Years and Key Stage 1, there is a strong focus on developing number sense, fluency and flexibility with number. Our approach draws upon the principles of Mastering Number, developing the secure foundations pupils need for future mathematical success. The national Mastering Number programme specifically aims for pupils to leave Key Stage 1 with fluency in calculation and confidence and flexibility with number.
Throughout the school, teachers use assessment to identify misconceptions and gaps in understanding and provide timely support, while pupils who grasp concepts quickly are challenged to reason more deeply, make connections and apply their knowledge in increasingly sophisticated ways.
Above all, we want pupils to leave Broadmere with strong mathematical foundations, confidence with number and the resilience to tackle unfamiliar problems, understanding that mathematics is a powerful tool for making sense of the world around them.
